I am working on a childrens book, however the illustrations that I would like to use are coming off of some larger scale art work on canvas/wood. Do publishing companies require the art to be book sized? or can it be photographed/scanned and sized down?

Can a 3×4 foot sized painting or larger be photographed and used as a childrens book illustration?
